If you are in the city of Manchester and looking for somewhere fabulous to feast, let me let you into a little secret….
When it comes to restaurants, Manchester has around 700, with new ones popping up all the time. So with that many to choose from, where do you even start?
Six By Nico, that’s where.
A relatively new addition to the city’s ‘dining club’, Six By Nico arrived on our doorstep in Summer 2019 and is the brainchild of Scottish chef Nico Simeone. The name derives from a clever concept of a six course tasting menu which changes theme every six weeks.
The idea is genius; six plates, six weeks, £29 per person. Simple. Smart. Everyone gets the same food and the same (excellent) experience. The business model is sound; food wastage must be at absolute minimum, the chefs are able to perfect the dishes and at such an affordable price, they can’t fail to attract repeat visitors. Like me.
And yes, many of us have experienced tasting menus consisting of the tiniest of dishes that fail to fill you up and cost an arm and a leg for the privilege. You don’t have that here. Although the plates are small (how else could you eat six courses?), they are reasonably substantial and you do feel like you are getting real value for your money. Undoubtably, there will be flavour combinations that you will have never tried in your life.
The food not only tastes exquisite, but it looks fantastic. It can easily be described as one of the most exciting dining experiences; waiting in anticipation for the next course – what will it look and taste like? All the time trying desperately not to catch a glimpse of the other tables to ruin the surprise!
With Valentines Day just around the corner, if you’re looking for somewhere unique to romance your other half, then this is the place – but be quick as it gets booked up really quickly at the best of times, let alone on special dates.
The current menu (running until 16 February 2020) celebrates the ‘Best of 2019’, showcasing some of the most popular dishes of last year, decided by customers through an online vote. Anyone enjoying this menu can expect tasty delights such as ‘Penang Chicken’ from the Thai Street Food menu and ‘Deep Fried Mars Bar’ from the Chippie menu. Here’s a sneak look…..
And it’s not just the food that’s lovely. The staff are friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. Just don’t expect a single server. Six By Nico is like a well-oiled machine where staff work together to ensure you a super-efficient service. The dining room is also welcoming – small and intimate (with just 66 covers) and with an open kitchen so you can watch the chefs at work.

Nico recently opened a Liverpool restaurant (in addition to Manchester, Edinburgh, Belfast and Glasgow) which appears to be running a few menus behind Manchester – so if the above photos from previous menus look tempting, it’s worth checking out Liverpool too.
